Wow. It’s happening! I’m learning to code and someone is paying me to do it! How did I get so lucky? My name is Kristin and I’m going to take you along with me on my GameDevHQ Internship journey of learning game development.
Let me tell you, game development is perhaps the last thing I thought I’d be doing right now. I grew up in rural Wisconsin and occasionally helped my dad, who built custom houses from the ground up. I’ve been a fine-dining waitress and I’ve worked in a mom-and-pop fast food joint. I’ve bartended, barista-ed, walked dogs, cashiered at a parking ramp, and worked at a law office. Before Covid hit, I was running my own business by driving for Uber and Lyft. I’d like to think all this experience has made me well-rounded and a bit unconventional. So why not add game development to the list?
Truth be told, I do have 12 solid weeks of programming experience under my belt. I completed the DevLeague software engineer program a couple years back but never pursued a web dev job afterwards. I was one of the greenest pupils in the class and the break-neck-warp speed of the bootcamp left me feeling a bit beaten down and uninspired. However, enough time has passed and I’m as excited as ever to rekindle my love for programming.
As they say, get back on the horse and try, try again!
